Our History

Who are we and something about our history

Back to the old kampong days in Lorong Tai Seng in 1974, a few public spirited residents started a service to provide help to the needy. As devotees of Patron Saint Master Song Da Fong, a committee was formed to carry out its activities and services as according to the teaching of our Patron Saint. This was the beginning of CHENG HONG SIANG TNG. The services were basic and appropriate during those days. Cheng Hong Siang Tng was providing help to the poor, free medical cares, conduct funeral services and occasionally provide free burial services to the needy. The temple was very popular and had tremendous support from the villagers and people from other areas.

Cheng Hong Siang Tng was officially registered with the Registrar of Societies in 1976 under the leadership of the late Mr Goh Kow Eng. A free traditional Chinese medical corner was also setup to provide free Chinese medical services to all races in the community. Our Siang Tng became a member of the Blue Cross Charitable Institution to further its charitable cause.

The Traditional Chinese Medical Services was officially opened by Mr, Tan Cheng San, then Member of Parliament for Paya Lebar and the late Mr Chng Tok Gun, then Chairman of Blue Cross Charitable Institution on 22nd April 1978.

In 1979, Lorong Tai Seng was gazetted by the Government to be acquired for redevelopment. Mr Lim Hang Chung, Chairman of Cheng Hong Siang Tng and the late Mr Tan Lor Yam, then Secretary, led Board Members to conduct a donation campaign for the construction of a new temple at 30 Arumugan Road. The temple was completed in 1990 and was officially declared open by our Legal Advisor Mr Lee Kim Siang on 23rd February.

In 2000, Cheng Hong Siang Tng joined the South West Community Development Council (CDC), PAP Community Foundation (PCF) Yuhua, and Thye Hua Kwan Moral Society jointly setup Loving Heart Multi-Service Centre situated at Blk 210 Jurong East St 21. Loving Heart Multi-Service Centre runs a number of services and programmes to benefit the elderly and needy residents in the South West CDC district namely, Meals Delivery Service, Medical Escort, Home Help Service, Counselling Service, Family Life Education and other community services.

With the help of Mr Alex Lee, Cheng Hong Welfare Service Society was setup and officially registered with the Registrar of Societies in 2nd July 2004. This is to consolidate all welfare services of Cheng Hong Siang Tng under one umbrella. Cheng Hong Welfare Service Society is also a member of National Council Of Social Services and was awarded Institute of Public Character (i.e. tax-exempt) status in October 2004.
